A career in modelling can be an exciting and fantastic opportunity to travel and see the world, to meet many new diverse and interesting people, all the while generating a healthy income. Models often find that the experience gained, and the contacts made, can lead to a career in acting, fashion, styling, magazine journalism, public relations, fashion house direction, fashion design and many other fields. Before starting out, it is important to be aware that modelling is a highly competitive career. However good you look, success can only be achieved through dedication, professionalism and steps in the right direction. There are many different types of modelling, from high fashion and catwalk, commercial, body part, promotional, glamour, plus size and petite. If modelling is something you want to pursue, it is important to establish whether you have the potential to model, and if so, which area of modelling suits you best. There are no official qualifications required, but models need to excel in looks and attitude. You must work hard to look your best - a healthy diet, regular exercise and general TLC are all essential. Resilience, a thick skin and the mental ability to cope with rejection are all also important qualities to have in a competitive industry. Modelling can sometimes require a lot of waiting around, and going to castings can be very time consuming. Patience, staying upbeat and being polite and personable are must-have characteristics. Any talent you may have, for example, dancing or acting, can give you a competitive edge. As an aspiring model, taking up drama or dance can help towards your ability, and build your confidence.
